Salcombe Pubs

We have been known to visit the pub once or twice whilst in Salcombe and even tried the odd sandwich shop. (Although some of us may wait in the pub whilst sandwiches & ice creams are purchased)

Our Favourite haunt for a few years was the Fortescue (No. 6 on map). This is a popular pub which can get very busy later at night. The food was always good and the beer too but we changed our Saturday night venue in 2001 to Spinnakers Restaurant (No. 21.) as Steve & DJ 'had found a place overlooking the estuary'. Little did we know that the outdoor eating area was like the Amazon & we caught only slight glimpses of tips of yacht masts.

We have on a number of occasions eaten at the Old Inn in Marlborough (No. 15) again the food has always been good but in 2002, got the impression that they weren't in the mood that night for a group of friendly gentlemen with false teeth.

Well worth a trip aboard a hired powerboat is the Millbrook (No. 14) however, tides are usually against us and a better bet is the Globe at Frogmore (No. 9.)

5.	The Ferry Inn, Fore Street, Salcombe, Devon, TQ8 8JE, Tel: 01548 844000 Not the prettiest pub in the area but what a location. The Ferry serves good ales and wholesome food including as you'd expect, fresh local crab sandwiches. Busy with holidaymakers, the Ferry is located as its' name suggests - next to the passenger ferry which crosses the estuary. In sunny weather, the location is glorious.

The Fortescue Inn, Union Street, Salcombe, Devon, TQ8 8BZ, Tel: 01548 842868 Tucked away in a quiet part of Salcombe yet just 50 yards from the sea lies The Fortescue Inn, a charming and quaint old place that dates back, in parts, to the early 18^th century and, indeed, one of its bars was once the old stables. The interior of this traditional old inn has retained much of its original character and, along with the olde worlde atmosphere, there are numerous artefacts, memorabilia and old photographs hanging on the walls.

8.	Gara Rock Hotel, East Portlemouth, Salcombe, Devon, TQ8 8PH, Tel: 01548 842342, Gara Rock Website The Gara Rock Hotel has a view which you'd struggle to beat anywhere in the country. Perched high above the cliffs and accessed either by car, a short walk across the fields from the Salcombe Estuary or via a longer walk using the South West Coastal Path, the Gara Rock is well worth the effort to find. A luxurious lounge is often empty as the views across the bay are even more appealing when the sun is out. The Coastal path from the Salcombe Ferry is simply stunning in good weather and on one of our visits, we were greeted with ales served straight from the cask sitting on the reception counter.
9.	Globe Inn, Frogmore, near Kingsbridge, Devon TQ7 2NR, Tel: 01548 531351 The Globe is situated in the pretty village of Frogmore, which lies between Dartmouth and Kingsbridge. The inn is located on the A379, but we have always approached by boat from the Kingsbridge Estuary. Tides do have to be in your favour however, otherwise you'll either be stuck for twelve hours or get very wet / muddy. The Globe has two bars. A pleasant lounge with open fires and a nautical theme. There are some great paintings of old sailing ships on the walls. The bar is a typical pub bar with flagsstone floor, pool table and darts although when we were last present, some of the bar stools needed recovering. The food is good and wholesome but typical 'pub grub'. There doesn't appear to be anything on the menu which really gets the mouth watering unless your experience of 'top nosh' is fish 'n' chips. Locally caught seafood is usually on the menu though but one thing that the Globe excels at, is the beer. We enjoyed a number of excellently well kept pints of 'Abbot Ale' and some of us probably drank the lager as well !

You'll hate it if you visit in the height of the summer season and you're a person who doesn't like lots of nasty holidaymakers. You'll love it though, if you catch the place on a hot sunny day as pub locations don't get much better than this. Overlooking Hope Cove in a picturesque village with sandy beaches in front and to the side, the Hope & Anchor is a great place to sit and quaff a decent pint of ale. the food is good also and so are the cream teas at the nearby tea shoppe.

The Old Inn, Higher Town, Malborough, near Kingsbridge, Devon TQ7 3RL, Tel: 01548 561320 Found just outside the centre of Malborough, The Old Inn is a former coaching inn that dates back to the early 18^th century and, today, it continues to offer both locals and visitors a warm and friendly welcome. Surprisingly light and airy inside, guests here cannot only enjoy an excellent selection of drinks from the bar but also tuck into some delicious food. Specialising in fresh fish dishes, both the lunchtime and evening menus are popular here and it is essential to book at weekends.
